    SHANE KESSEL

    Coach Kessel has been with the Knights program since 2016 and has been coaching since 2009.

    A two time coach of the year recipient, Coach Kessel lead the Okotoks Eagles to a Tier II Provincial Championship in 2014 and helped the Knights capture their Tier II Provincial Championship and #1 National ranking in 2019 and 2022. Coach Kessel also coaches linebackers and is special teams coordinator with the Team Alberta U17’s.

    Coach Kessel has a passion for being both a student and teacher of the game and is proud to be part of the KNIGHTS football family.

    BRENT SMITH

    Brent has been with the Knights program since 2020, coaching offensive line until 2022, when he made the move to defensive line.

    He has been coaching since 2013, beginning with Red Deer minor football, where he was a coach and board member for 4 years. After a move to Okotoks in 2017, he joined the Foothills Bantam Eagles, where he spent the next 3 seasons, winning a tier 2 city championship in 2018 and a tier 3 championship in 2019.

    Brent played defensive line at Holy Cross high school in Saskatoon, and went on to play offensive line in the CJFL’s Victoria Payless (now the Raiders) for a short time before ultimately retiring due to injury.

  • DEFENSIVE LINE

    HUNTER KESSEL

    As a KNIGHTS Alumni, coach Kessel helped capture the Tier II Provincial Championship in 2019 as a defensive tackle and special teams player. He was also a silver medalist in the 2018 Provincial game. Coach Kessel was selected to the Nissan Kickoff Project, playing in the All-Star event during the 2019 Grey Cup celebrations.

    Coach Kessel brings an infectious energy to the team and is known for his motivational pregame speeches as a player and enthusiasm on the sidelines as a coach.

  • DEFENSIVE LINE

    CHRIS BELL

    Coach Bell was a member of the Huskie Football team as an Offensive and Defensive Linemen, from 1991-95. During that time, he was part of the team that competed in the National Championship game, the Vanier Cup, in 1994.

    Coach Bell joins the staff for his first year after spending his last three with the Springbank Phoenix as the Defensive Line coach. Prior to that, Coach Bell spent five seasons with the University of Alberta Golden Bears (2008-12), two seasons with the Edmonton Huskies Junior Football Club as an Offensive Line coach (2006-7) and one year as the Offensive Line coach with the Lacombe Rams (2000). He has been a coach at the U of A Linemen Camp (2009-11), a guest coach at the All Pro Camp (2011), the Alberta North Senior Bowl (2008-10) and the Alberta U17 and U18 Selection Camps (2008-12), and a presenter at the U of A Advanced Coaches Clinic (2010).

  • RUNNING BACKS

    MERVYN BRICE

    Coach Brice was a high school all-star at running back, and went on to play at the University of Saskatchewan, earning Freshman Player of the Year honours in his rookie season.

    Coach Brice is entering his sixth year at HTA and his twelfth year overall. Prior to HTA, Coach Brice coached with the Foothills Eagles community football program, from the Atom level through to Bantam. In 2014 he helped the Eagles win City and Tier II Provincial Championships.

    Coach Brice enjoys teaching all aspects of the game, from fundamentals through to position skills and offensive strategy.

    MATT BAXTER

    Coach Baxter grew up in NE Calgary, Marlborough Park, across the street from where the bantam Golden Hawks practiced. “As long as I can remember I loved football and couldn’t wait to start playing at 13 years old”. Coach Baxter played for 9 years, three as a QB with the Hawks and three with the Crescent Heights Cowboys in high school. In high school, coach Baxter played QB, slotback, punter, place kicker, and returner. Following high school, coach Baxter played three years as a slotback with the Calgary Colts. Coach Baxter joined the Knights family in 2010 ad has enjoyed coaching seven seasons.
